氟化物主要的作用是加速牙齒表面再鈣化的機轉，更能使早期的脫鈣現象回復。要達到最好的效果，需要琺瑯質與氟離子長時間、高頻率接觸。氟化物可以減少牙齒鈣質的流失，幫助鈣質之復原，使牙齒對齲蛀更具抵抗性。
